Tracking lobbying expenditures and government affairs engagement across the private equity industry
Published by GP Stakes, the private markets intelligence platform
Private equity firms are active participants in the policy process, spending millions annually on lobbying to influence regulations affecting their businesses. From carried interest taxation to financial regulation, the industry's political engagement reflects the significant stakes involved in policy outcomes.
This report tracks 438 lobbying disclosure filings from 40 PE-related firms, totalling $42.4M in reported expenditures. The data provides transparency into which firms are most politically active, what issues they prioritize, and how spending patterns have evolved over time.
For GP stakes investors, lobbying data provides a unique signal about regulatory risk and opportunity. Firms that invest heavily in government affairs may be better positioned to navigate regulatory changes, but they also signal that their business models face meaningful policy risk. Understanding the lobbying landscape helps contextualize the regulatory environment in which target managers operate.
Key policy areas for the private equity industry include tax treatment of carried interest, SEC examination and disclosure requirements, ESG reporting mandates, and retirement plan investment regulations. Changes in any of these areas can materially affect fund economics and, by extension, the value of GP stakes investments.

Lobbying data is sourced from the US Senate Lobbying Disclosure Act database, which requires organizations spending above a threshold on lobbying activities to file quarterly reports. The dataset focuses on filings where the client or registrant is a private equity firm or industry association. Spend figures reflect amounts reported in each filing. Issue classifications are taken directly from the lobbying disclosure forms. Data is updated periodically as new filings become available.
